Day 7: January 2019

So this is truly, truly, truly the last night in Faro!

We have really enjoyed this beautiful seaside haven but we want to move on now, we need a change of scenery and we need to walk!

Today we sat up on the huge roof terrace with stunning views and formed a new plan.

The journey we had decided on, travelling inland and across to Lisbon has been discarded and a new plan formed. We will walk along the coast all the way.

The reason for this change is mainly because we came across a known walk (or cycle route) called the Ecovia Trail. The website lays out the route and tells you how many kilometres are between villages. We also figured that if the coast is littered with resorts and surfer spots, there might be more chance of finding affordable accommodation.

So here is our new plan.

Ecovia route takes us all the way to Cabo Sao Vicente, and then there is another route, Rota Vicentina which takes us up the coast to Santiago do Cacem, which has a Camino path to Lisbon.

Ecovia route is about 150km, the Vicentina route 213km and the journey from Cabo to Lisbon 159km, so that’s a grand total of 522.5km and we’ll only be in Lisbon!!!!!!

This latest plan is verging on the edge of true lunacy, we are laughing just looking at those kilometres. It is just 278 kilometres to drive from Faro to Lisbon cross-country. Maybe we are mad?? It is a possibility. But this zany zigzag coastal trek is the one we have decided on and tomorrow the adventure begins. We are entering a world that is as yet pure imagination….

The first stage is Faro – Quarteira (18km) As yet we have no accommodation there and the cheapest place on Booking.com was 28 euro so Liisa has sent out some couch surfing requests and we’re still hoping for a result. The next stage is Quarteira – Albufeira and we have had an invite from a couch surfer there. A Brazilian guy in his 50’s has offered to put us up. His name is Umberto and his profile tells us he is an Albufeiro tour guide who can style hair and obviously visits the gym regularly. A little apprehensive? Maybe… But we have faith in the road and need a haircut! Umberto here we come!!!!

Tomorrow is Sunday so I’ve made us a huge pasta salad to pack away in our Poundland lunchboxes and boiled several eggs. We are equipped and ready to start an egg-cellent, egg-hilarating adventure! 🙂
