Jolien and I headed off for another walk, this time taking the Fisherman’s Trail from Aljezur to Arrifana, which started inland on the same track as our first walk along the Historical Trail, which meant we got to see our friend Mr. Alpaca again. I’m not sure who out of the three of us was most excited to meet again!

We strolled through rolling hills, sandy tracks and great scenery, picking up a walking stick along the way.

We emerged from the sprawling green to see the dazzling blue ocean.

The sun was shining hot and we stopped for a picnic on the cliff edge, watching specks of people playing on the beaches below. We headed on. The Historical way is well marked with red and white stripes and the fisherman’s trail by blue and green.

Although it seemed well marked we somehow seemed to go a little wrong, and it was apparent our 18km was going to end up being more…. The sun was setting and we were far from home.

Using Google maps we tried to shortcut across the wilderness to find a road we could hitch home on but we came across the steepest of steep slopes and for a moment we wondered if we maybe should have just headed backwards along known tracks to road we saw a few km back…. But no! Forwards we inched, sticks to keep us upright, then up, up, up and suddenly the path was familiar. We were back on a track from this morning. We had made our own circle. A guy out foraging had his car and we hitched from an unlikely spot, off road, back to Aljezur, stopping to buy well earned pizzas, chocolate desserts and crisps en route.

We had a fun day!
